Anodization is simply the process of creating an oxide layer in a controlled chemical reaction with a solution containing the color dye you want the finish to have. Aluminum oxide is a very strong salt - it is what they use in a lot of sandpaper as the cutting medium. This provides a very durable finish, however, it can't be done on a polished surface and still retain the mirror surface as far as I am aware.
